A 23-year-old woman was shot in the leg Sunday afternoon, apparently hit by gang-related gunfire intended for a group of people in a neighboring yard, authorities said.

She was being treated at a local hospital for what was believed to be a noncritical wound, police Sgt. Tim Bardwell said.

The shooting was reported about 2:20 p.m. in the 1300 block of Roosevelt Avenue, just two blocks east of a gang-related shooting that seriously wounded a 13-year-old girl last Monday.

The victim in that case was hit by a round fired through the exterior wall of her duplex after the suspects confronted an adult resident in the driveway. Police said the family had no gang or drug ties; the circumstances remain under investigation.

Bardwell said it was too early to tell whether the two incidents were connected.

Vehicles and houses on two lots were hit in Sunday's shooting, when at least one gunman fired multiple rounds from the alley south of Roosevelt near the Custer Avenue intersection, Bardwell said.

The suspects apparently meant to target a group in the yard to the east of the address where the woman was shot in the leg, he said.

Another woman sitting in a vehicle at the target address suffered a minor cut from a glass or a bullet fragment, he said.

The suspect vehicle, possibly a gray Chevrolet Lumina or similar car, left the area.

Anyone with tips may call the police department at 509-575-6200.
