Tacoma police continued on Monday to investigate a shooting that left a 26-year-old man dead and another man wounded early Sunday.

No arrests were made, police spokesman Mark Fulghum said.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office has not released the victim's name because his identity has not been confirmed.

The 26-year-old man was driving with two passengers when he and a back seat passenger were shot just after 2 a.m. near South 74th and Oakes streets, Fulghum said. The car, traveling erratically, came up behind a patrol car responding to a different call and narrowly missed it before coming to a stop.

The officers in the patrol car went to the aid of the wounded people in the car and a second vehicle involved in the shooting fled.

The wounded passenger, a 30-year-old man, was taken to a local hospital for treatment. His condition was not known Monday. The third person in the car was not hurt, Fulghum said.

Police stopped a white SUV suspected in the shooting and arrested the people inside. They were booked into jail on suspicion of a drive-by shooting and unlawful gun possession.

Police still were trying to determine the motive for the shooting. Detectives were investigating whether it was connected to another shooting that happened minutes earlier after an argument at a bar near South 54th Street and Cedar Street.

No one was wounded in that incident, police said.

Tacoma-Pierce County Crime Stoppers is offering up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest and charges filed in the case. Tipsters may remain anonymous.

Tacoma police say a shooting that left one man dead early Sunday began as a bar fight.

Spokesman Mark Fulghum said an undetermined number of people began to argue at a bar near South 56th Street and South Tacoma Way at about 2 a.m. One group left in a car and an SUV, the other in a car. The first group began to shoot at the second group, then both groups began to disperse.

Later, the two cars found each other, and the shooting began again. The driver of the first car was shot and killed and his passenger wounded. Their vehicle barely missed a Tacoma police cruiser, and came to rest at South 74th and Oakes streets.

Shortly after the shooting, officers found the SUV involved in the first shooting at a gas station at South 72nd and Hosmer streets. The five passengers were arrested and are being questioned.

The other shooters and their car have not been located. No description was available, but all involved are believed to be men in their 20s, Fulgum said.
