A man was shot in the leg early this morning during a fight involving numerous people at 36th Avenue South and South Adams Street.
At about 3:15 a.m., police responded to the intersection after receiving a 911 call from a man who claimed to be the shooter. Officers found numerous people and vehicles in the street when they arrived.
Police separated the two battling groups and identified and detained the man believed to be the shooter. They also gave first aid to the victim, who suffered a "through-and-through" gunshot that shattered his femur. A handgun was recovered along with a single bullet casing, police said.
The victim was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where he is in stable condition.
The suspect told police he was assaulted and opened fire in self-defense. The victim's brother said a fight between the suspect and a female was broken up by the victim, prompting the shooting.
The suspect was later booked into King County Jail for investigation of assault.
