A 19-year-old Warden man was shot to death at an Othello park, authorities said Thursday.

Ismael Garcia Jr. was shot twice during a fight between two small groups at Taggares Park, 608 S. Taylor Road, Adams County Sheriff Doug Barger said in a news release.

The shooting was reported at 6:21 p.m. Wednesday. Garcia was pronounced dead at Othello Community Hospital. He was taken there by his friends.

As the fight between the two groups at the park escalated, several shots were fired from a handgun, Barger said.

The group that included the suspected shooter ran away, he said. The other group took Garcia to the hospital, he said.

Deputies secured the park and interviewed several witnesses Wednesday and Thursday.

The Adams County Sheriff's Posses guarded the crime scene overnight Wednesday, and investigators spent Thursday at the park collecting evidence.

The park isn't near any schools, but police asked Othello School District officials to keep kids indoors Thursday as a precaution, officials said.

An autopsy has not been scheduled.
