Mayor Holds Statewide Conference on Firearm Violence Prevention
Polls have continuously shown that our communities support sensible firearms laws. However, despite community support, sensible policy solutions to firearm violence have been difficult to achieve. This week Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels took the first step toward hurdling some of the obstacles we have encountered when trying to strengthen existing laws.
Through the generous support of the Joyce Foundation, Mayor Nickels convened nearly 200 community leaders (community organizers, law enforcement, clergy, physicians, public health officials, policy makers and more) to discuss the problems and solutions to firearm violence across Washington State. At the conference local experts showed that firearm violence impacts all communities in the state and identified ways in which we can decrease the impact firearm violence has on our communities. The state-wide leaders attending the conference echoed what we at CeaseFire have been saying for nearly twenty-five years: gun violence is a preventable epidemic that we cannot address quickly enough.
Each day in Washington someone loses a family member, friend or co-worker to firearm violence. But through education and sensible policy solutions we can save lives. The Mayor's conference was an encouraging and courageous step toward change. Visit the Mayor's Website to find out more about the conference or write Mayor Nickels a thank you note for his leadership on gun violence prevention.

Kristen,
I am shocked and very sad to learn that "Each day in Washington someone loses a family member, friend or co-worker to firearm violence" from your Blog. That means at least 365-366 people died and will die, each year, by gun shot in Washington State. It has to stop.
