They hire teenage boys to mow their yards, mothers run in-home day cares and young men help old ladies install air conditioners.

But it's also a place where rival gang members live practically next door to one another and occasionally fight in the streets and alleys.

A man in his mid-40s was in critical condition after being shot Thursday in the Parkland area.

Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said the man was shot about 6:30 p.m. in the 11400 block of Eighth Avenue Court South. It appeared to be a robbery or drug deal gone bad, Troyer said. Deputies believe the victim, who has a criminal history, was targeted, Troyer said.

A 24-year-old woman was being held Friday in the Pierce County Jail without charges while police investigate her role in a deadly shooting that occurred inside a Tacoma apartment where two children were sleeping.

Michelle Delena Deda made a preliminary appearance in Superior Court on Friday. Judge Linda Lee ordered her jailed in lieu of $1 million bail until Tuesday when she must either be charged with a crime or released.

GRANDVIEW -- An investigation continues into a shooting that sent two men to hospitals after what police said was a drug deal gone bad.

Brian K. Quantrell, 29, of Pasco was airlifted to Seattle's Harborview Medical Center with a bullet wound to his chest, said Asst. Police Chief Mark Ware. He was in critical condition Thursday afternoon.

The Grant County Sheriff's Office is investigating the slaying of a Warden man who was shot to death in his car.

The shooting may be drug related, Undersheriff John Turley said.

Sheriff's deputies found Juan Carlos Lopez Estrada, 34, in the driver's seat of a 1996 Dodge Stratus after someone called 911 at 6:30 a.m. Saturday to report that all the car's doors were open and a man inside was not moving, Turley said.

A 22-year-old woman was shot in the arm early Friday following an altercation at a Lofall-area home, according to Kitsap County Sheriff's Office reports.

Deputies were called to the 90 block of Wesley Way just after midnight for a report that someone had been shot. They found a bloody pack of cigarettes and a bullet near a shed, where a 26-year-old man lives.

A homicide victim met his alleged shooter at a Taco Time drive-through in Coeur d'Alene, according to court papers filed Monday.

The call history on Anthony E. Dennis' cell phone led detectives to three suspects after the 43-year-old was found shot to death in his 1999 Ford Expedition near Grant Street and Pacific Avenue in Spokane about 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Three men have been arrested in north Idaho for what police say was a drug-related shooting death in Spokane, Wash.

Spokane police said Friday morning that 25-year-old Henry J. Halloway of Coeur d'Alene, 20-year-old Jalil K. Handy of Post Falls and 21-year-old Samuel Thomas of San Fransisco are in the Kootenai County jail.
